Released by the University of Saskatchewan in 2008, the Prairie Sensation apple is a cold-hardy variety bred to withstand harsh prairie winters. Known for its crisp, juicy texture and aromatic flavour, it’s an excellent choice for growers looking for both resilience and taste.
Key Features:
- Size: Large, 7.3–8.6 cm in diameter (average 7.63 cm or 3 inches).
- Color: Light green base with 50% red wash and stripes.
- Shape: Round to slightly oblate with a smooth, medium-thick skin.
- Texture: Fine, firm, tender (breaking), crisp, and juicy.
- Flavour: Mild subacid with an intense aromatic component.
- Storage: Stores well with excellent quality up to January and February.
- Tree: Slightly leggy with an open crown, moderate short spurs (not a tip-bearer), hardy in extreme cold.
- Rootstock: Columbia Crab Apple.
- Harvest: Reliable crops even after harsh winters; minimal thinning required.
