The University of Saskatchewan introduced Aurora as the ideal pollinizer for Borealis, and since its debut, it has set the standard for commercial haskap cultivation. Aurora has earned its status as one of the most widely planted cultivars worldwide, and it is celebrated for its exceptional commercial attributes, sweeter taste, and higher productivity.
Why Aurora Stands Out:
- Exceptional Flavor: Known for its superior taste, Aurora has a sweeter profile due to its lower acidity, making it a favourite among growers and consumers alike.
- High Productivity: With significantly higher yields, Aurora produces large, easily harvestable berries averaging 1.9 grams each. This makes it a top choice for both commercial producers and home gardeners.
- Disease Resistance: Aurora is highly resistant to common plant diseases, enhancing its appeal as a low-maintenance, high-yield option for those seeking a reliable crop.
To ensure proper fruit set, Aurora requires an unrelated companion plant. It pairs with Borealis, Indigo Gem, Honeybee, and Boreal Beast. Most growers are planting at a ratio of 2:1, with two Aurora plants for every companion plant. Research conducted in Quebec on various haskap varieties has shown that yields can be significantly higher when companion plants are placed in the same row for pollination purposes. - Boreal Beast: With a 4.5 out of 5 on the flavor scale for three consecutive years, Boreal Beast is celebrated for its superior flavour, best aroma, and improved berry retention.
